The Portuguese Water Dog, or "Cão de Água," is a medium-sized, energetic, and intelligent breed originally developed in Portugal for various water-related tasks such as herding fish into nets, retrieving lost fishing equipment, and carrying messages between boats. This versatile breed is known for its distinctive curly or wavy coat that is either black, white, or shades of brown, which makes them virtually hypoallergenic and requires regular grooming to maintain a healthy appearance. Adult Portuguese Water Dogs typically weigh between 16 to 27 kilograms (35 to 60 pounds), with males being generally larger than females. These dogs exhibit a strong work ethic, exceptional swimming abilities and a natural affinity for water, making them excellent companions for water sports and activities. Their outgoing, friendly nature, combined with an eagerness to learn, renders the Portuguese Water Dog a suitable choice for families, as well as an adept candidate for obedience, agility, and therapy dog training.
