The Irish Wolfhound is a breed of domestic dog, specifically a very large sighthound from Ireland. The name originates from its purpose—wolf hunting with dogs—rather than from its appearance. It is the tallest of all recognised breeds. Irish Wolfhounds can be an imposing sight, standing as high as 32 inches at the shoulder and weighing as much as 180 pounds (80 kgs). Despite their formidable appearance, they are gentle giants and are truly devoted to their families. They are also relatively calm dogs.
